Craftsmanship

Are you looking for dovetail, lap or mortise and tenon joinery? Is your designer specifying undermount full-extension, overtravel, or standard 3/4 extension drawer slides?

The choices in custom woodworking are almost endless. At Aloha Cabinetry our approach to craftsmanship is consultative. Our cabinetmakers and craftsman have the expertise to transform your every need into the approriate woodworking solution. But understanding what you need is not always easy. We work closely with every client to help them understand the available options and the affect each one has on the delivery and cost of the overall project.

The following list highlights some of the standard elements of our craftsmanship:

Equipment and Materials
It all starts with the processing of raw materials. Not only do we carefully select all our hardwood and sheet goods for consistent grain and color match and with no visible defects, but we utilize the latest and finest pieces of equipment to prepare all of our stock.

Our CNC equipment can cut material to the thousandth's (0.001) of an inch. With this type of accuracy, you can rest assured that your european or frameless cabinetry will be square and true--allowing all your reveals between doors and drawer fronts to be consistent.

We use only the top quality hardware from reputable suppliers. Typically our choice of hardware will depend on its durability, availability, and quality. If the part specified is not available from our regular suppliers, we will be happy to locate it and qualify it for appropriateness.

Furniture Casework
Although there are few guidelines which dictate how furniture should be built, the design is really only limited by ones imagination. Cases, doors, and drawers can be made utilizing man made sheet goods for speed and affordability or meticulously grain matched in solid wood with no mechanical fasteners for a more fine furniture feel.

As a standard:

  • Our doors and drawers are solid wood.
  • We use blind dado, mortise and tenon, biscuit, and pocket-hole joinery in our case construction.
  • All raised panels float to allow for expansion and contraction.
  • Every cabinet gets a back panel that is recessed into dado joints for strength and beauty.

Cabinet Casework
In contrast to fine furniture, cabinets generally follow fairly common industry standards-- kitchen base cabinets are 24" deep to accomodate standard appliances.

We build all our cases in melamine or 3/4" veneer plywood as specified by the client. All our frameless cabinets utilize a blind dado construction for a stronger case. All of our face frame casework is constructed in as few pieces as possible to create a more refined furniture look, while adjoining cabinets get loose stiles to avoid the distintive "modular look."

Our preferred method is to glue our solid wood face frames to the case for strength, durability and aesethetics. This eliminates the unsightly nail holes and produces a better finished product.

Doors
In all but a few circumstances, we purchase our doors from major door manufacturers. The result is a better door, wider selection, shorter build time, and lower cost.

Drawers
Our standard drawers are a Dovetail construction made from 1/2" 9-ply baltic birch with a floating 1/4" birch bottom.

Other options available: doweled, nailed, 5/8"-3/4" solid wood construction, 3/8"-1/2" drawer bottoms.

Slide options: full-extension (overtravel), tandem or import undermount, european metal box with integrated slow close.

Finish
We believe combining professionals to accomplish a single job always produces a superior product.

Finishing is a trade that is sometimes described as an 'art'. We utilize the services of four different finishers depending on the project. Each artisan has their particular talent, whether it be spraying just a clear coat of conversion varnish, faux finishing, or matching an existing distressed look.

We will choose the right finisher to complete your job in the highest quality manner and at the best possible price.
